INSET: ICT

Basic Webpublishing and Interactive Stories

First, middle and special

This course is similar to last year’s “Developing your school website” course.  It focuses on a basic website development program - Webworkshop - to introduce planning and building a school website.

Because of the simplicity of the program it is also possible to use it to develop simple interactive stories with sound and pictures.  During the day teachers will have the opportunity to use Webworkshop and produce an interactive story or website.

The course will also demonstrate how to “upload” the websites developed by teachers and pupils.  For teachers who attended last year’s course there is a twilight on uploading websites.  Teachers wanting to produce more sophisticated websites should consider the courses on MS FrontPage which will cover developing and managing sites, adding animated graphics, etc..

Star Office : an alternative integrated office suite

All phases

The aim of this course is to introduce teachers to Star Office, examine its features and consider with colleagues its potential in the curriculum.  As the number of computers in schools increases many schools are finding it difficult to fund the provision of basic PC software.  Packages such as Microsoft Office can be very expensive when a school needs to buy multiple copies for a number of machines.

This course will look a FREE software package which is compatible with Office.

During the last year we have been trialing Star Office in schools around the County.  Star Office provides word processing, spreadsheet, database, charts, drawing, presentation, web publishing and graphics packages in a format which users of Office will find easy to use.  Star Office offers the potential of equipping every PC in a school with a powerful cross platform integrated office suite, all staff having a copy and copies also provided for pupils - all for free.  Worth considering before you buy your next software?

Technical expectations : teachers  need to be familiar with Microsoft Office and be involved with software acquisition / installation in school.  This course will be useful for ICT Co-ordinators (Star Office will also be discussed as an item on co-ordinators’ agendas, though without the details being provided by this course).
