Regional Secondary English Conference

This annual event will again offer a range of keynote speakers, supported by a choice of practical workshops. Details of specific content will be forwarded when planning is complete and venues secured.

Drama at Key Stages 3 & 4

Middle and high

This one day course is intended for both drama specialists and English leaders wishing to develop drama within their schools. It is also intended to act as the launch for a Drama network in county and there will be a session at the end of the day to consider how best to achieve this.

The day will be both stimulating and thought provoking as it will be led by Paul Bunyan, Drama Adviser for Northampton also Chair NATE Drama Committee, and a key figure nationally in Drama.

Flying the Basic Skills Agency Kite

All phases

Schools can work towards accreditation by the Basic Skills Agency for their work in literacy and numeracy. This one hour long input explains the kite mark and the work involved and other schools’ experiences. This is available to partnerships as part of their meetings or as separate twilight meetings.

This course was originally included in the 1998/99 Networks course book. We are still awaiting information from QCA which is needed to inform a course such as this. The management of key skills development is on the agenda of the relevant network groups.

The aim of this session is to highlight and disseminate effective practice in literacy development during the first year of Northumberland’s Literacy Strategy. There will be a variety of contributors including that of teachers and children, to make this a very practical and stimulating session.

Catching Up with "Catch Up"

First

"Catch Up" is now a recognised programme for reading recovery. It is targeted at Y3 children who fail to attain expected levels for reading in Y2 SATs. It can, in parts, be slotted into the Guided Reading Session of the Literacy Hour and makes effective use of the guided readers to promote reading and writing skills.

Literacy, History and ICT

First, Middle and Special

This six day course will be delivered by the Nuffield Primary History team from Leeds Metropolitan and Exeter Universities. The course will lead to a module certificate in professional studies in Education which can be used towards a Professional or Advanced Professional Diploma or an M.Ed.

The six day course will be organised into 3 sets of 2 days, Friday and Saturday (non residential). This arrangement is in order to reduce supply cover costs for schools.

The key areas covered will be:

  1. Literacy and History
  2. Reading and action research
  3. Non-fiction and imaginative writing
  4. Creativity and Historical writing and the Internet
  5. Stories and texts
  6. Presentations

Course members will have access, via the internet, to the Virtual Study Centre at Exeter University.

NB This course is dependent upon TTA approval which has not been received at the point of publication. Further details available from Mel Rockett.

I Can Write

All phases

"I Can Write" is an ICT package which supports pupils in the writing process and develops good practise in concentrating on developing content first.

One element of the program, "Writing", provides a framework for continuous writing and is organised into different genres with a broad selection of topics within each genre. Prompts and wordlist stimulate and support the writing process and assist pupils to compose text in a logical order.

The course will show teachers how to make full use of this program and also how to produce their own screens which will not only support work within the Literacy Hour, but across the whole curriculum.

Classroom Assistants Network

These network meetings are for anyone who works as a classroom assistant, whether paid or as a volunteer. They will supplement opportunities in school to get briefed on the numeracy and literacy strategies and to discuss effective ways of supporting in the classroom.

Challenging the More Able Pupil in the Literacy Hour

This half day course for KS1 & 2 teachers, aims to give strategies, suggest resources and describes management techniques that will ensure challenge for the more able child during the literacy hour.

The course will provide progression from the 3 day course identifying and providing for our most able pupils held during the year, but will also stand alone quite effectively.

Building on the Literacy Strategy

As part of the National Literacy Strategy all LEAs are being asked to provide a two day conference for two teachers from every secondary school during the Summer Term 1999. Supply cover will be paid from the LEA’s Standard Fund allocation. The conference will be free for all schools.

At the time of writing we know no more than the above information and further details will be sent to schools as and when they become available. We anticipate running the conference twice in order to accommodate demand.

Planning and Teaching the Literacy Strategy : Introductory course for supply and returning teachers

The Standards Fund budget allows us to provide training for supply teachers to enable them to provide continuity of learning for pupils.

This course is for supply teachers who have either had no training within the Literacy Strategy or still feel they would welcome an introduction to what is involved. The content of the course makes it appropriate for colleagues returning to teaching who feel in the same position.

This introductory course is offered twice. There is a follow up course for those who want to develop their knowledge and understanding further.

Planning and Teaching the Literacy Strategy : Follow up course for supply and returning teachers

This course fools on from the Introductory course on the Literacy Strategy. It is for supply teachers and those returning to teaching.

Building on the orientation and basic knowledge developed through the earlier course it looks more closely at planning and teaching the various elements of the literacy curriculum and explores some of the issues faced by schools.

Learning English as an Additional Language

Learning English and Using English to Learn

This one day course aims to provide information and guidance to staff helping pupils for whom English is an additional language:

  • to access the full curriculum
  • to network schools supporting these pupils
  • to help staff plan to meet the individual needs of those pupils
  • to develop strategies to help them with command of the English language in and out of the classroom

There will be a mixture of input, practical activities and case studies.
