These half day sessions provide an opportunity for heads of department of modern languages in high school to meet and consider issues relevant to their work. The content of each session will be to:

  • consider matters which participants wish to raise
  • provide an update on current developments in language teaching, management issues and staff development
  • provide an opportunity to share ideas and experiences

Induction of Language Assistants

All phases

This one day course provides an introduction to the work of the language assistant in Northumberland Schools. It will cover aspects of national and local education services, the assistants’ place with it and general expectations of schools with regard to the work of the assistant.

The day provides ideas and practical activities which encourage work in the four skills, group and pair work and the use of the target language in the classroom.

French Language Development Course

Middle, high and special

This course is a SOCRATES-LINGUA funded opportunity in its fourth year. It is held in France in the last 2 weeks of July. It aims to:

  • improve participants proficiency in French, especially listening and speaking
  • increase the participants range of strategies for use within their own classroom
  • enhance participants knowledge of the French cultural environment

The course combines intensive language work, practical assignments and cultural activities. It offers the opportunity to further enhance linguistic skills and develop cultural awareness. Accommodation will be with local families.

From GCSE to A / AS Level

The focus of this course will be on raising attainment through improving students’ learning skills. The course will comprise of a mixture of input, discussion and workshop sessions and will include the opportunity to:

  • reflect on the demands of A, A/S level courses in modern languages from a pupils’ learning angle
  • focus on students learning skills as a means to raise their attainment
  • take part in workshop sessions led by teachers who have successfully used strategies to support student learning in modern languages.

Learning Skills for A, A/S Level Students in Modern Languages

This half day session is designed to provide Y12 students in particular with effective learning skills as they embark on their A, A/S level course in a modern language.

The session will be in up to 5 venues in late September 1999 to enable as many A, A/S level students as possible and their teacher to attend.

This course is a follow up from the one day course for teachers of A, A/S Level classes "From GCSE to A, A/S Level" held on July 6, 1999.
