Managing a Subject

The aim of this course for subject leaders is to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to promote high attainment and good quality teaching for all pupils by the end of the course participants should have:

  • an understanding of the importance and purpose of the role of subject leader
  • a clear view of how their role relates to whole school management and the drive to improve standards
  • enhanced skills required to carry out their role
  • a deeper understanding of one aspect of their role which they have chosen to develop.

The course has six compulsory components including 3 half day sessions at the Education Development Centre, Hepscott Park. These are:

  1. Pre course task
  2. Why have subject leaders? A half day introductory session to clarify the importance and purposes of the role of a subject leader. Skills and competencies for this role will be clarified and each course member will identify an issue for focused development in their own school.
  3. School based development work with a focus on planning for improvements. Support will be available on request from the Standards and Effectiveness Division.
  4. Planning for Improvement. A half day session where participants have the opportunity to feedback on and discuss their school based research and where strategies for planning further improvement will be developed.
  5. Continued or second school based research activity
  6. The Supportive Role of the Subject Leader. A half day session identifying how the subject leader can be effective in supporting colleagues and promoting high standards. There will also be the opportunity for further feedback and discussion.

The expectations of the course are:

a. Anyone applying for this course will make a commitment to complete all the components, including the school based development work.

b. Course members will support one another through the network or by forming support partnership where appropriate.

NB this course may also be commissioned by individual schools for their own in house provision
