Management Development for Deputy Headteachers and Senior Teachers

First, middle and special.

The aim of this course for deputy headteachers and senior teachers is to support deputy heads and senior teachers in their personal, professional development and their role as co-managers in ensuring quality education and improved standards of achievement.

The course objectives are to:

  • clarify role and purpose of co-manager
  • explore the range of professional knowledge and understanding required to carry out responsibilities
  • understand the attributes and personal competence needed to lead, manage and deploy individuals and teams
  • provide personal professional development opportunities

Outline of Programme

Some pre-session work in school.

Introductory Session

  • Clarify role and purpose
  • Key areas of knowledge and understanding of school improvement
  • Understanding strategic planning cycle
  • Preparing to action this in schools
  • Establishing support networks

Follow up Session 2

  • Analysing issues from school based work:
  • Developing and managing staff to maintain improvement including appraisal
  • Supporting and evaluating work by groups, teams and individuals
  • Preparing next stages in school
  • Maintaining support networks

Follow up Session 3

  • Evaluating progress and improvement
  • Providing information for accountability to governors, community and parents.
  • Plan for future needs and further development

There will be an expectation of commitment to all three sessions, the intention being to ensure that the professional development of deputies and senior teachers is rooted in the context of a realistic and current aspect of their own school improvement programme. This will be supported by a networking system, established during the programme and also on request, school based support.
