INSET: Management Development for Headteachers, Subject Leaders and SENCos


Managing the role of SENCo

All phases

This course aims to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required of SENCO to effectively lead and manage other colleagues in order to promote high standards of achievement for pupils with special educational needs.

By the end of this course participants should have:

  • An understanding of the importance and purpose of the role of the SENCO
  • Enhanced skills in order to carry out that role
  • A clear understanding of the role of SENCO as an integral part of whole school management in the drive to improve standards

This course will consist of six compulsory components which will include three half day centre-based sessions at Hepscott Park.

The six components are:

  1. A short pre-course task.
  2. An introductory half day session which clarifies the importance and purpose of the role of SENCO, identifies the skills and competencies required to fulfil this role and focuses on an issue for development in the participant’s own school.
  3. School-based research and development focused on planning for improvement. In school support will be available on request from a member of the Standards Division.
  4. Centre-based half day session. Participants will have the opportunity to feedback and discuss school based research findings and will develop strategies for planning for further improvement.
  5. Continuing development work in school.
  6. Centre based half day session. Effective management - supporting and advising colleagues; leading and managing meetings; promoting high standards of achievement.

The expectations of the course are:

a. Anyone applying for this course will make a commitment to complete all the components, including the school based development work.
b. Course members will support one another through the network or by forming support partnership where appropriate.
