RESOURCES FOR PRIMARY LEVEL AND KS2 WIDER OPPORTUNITIES IN MUSIC

Publications for Primary Music Teachers

UkuleleseUnited This resource will help you teach ukulele to large groups. It includes resources to support teaching and learning, including IWB activities, backing tracks and resources to photocopy. There are warm ups, and lots of varied material for the main teaching section of the lesson. The backing tracks can support the practice of individual techniques, enhance performance, or aid composition and improvisation activities.
There are note based activities to help pupils develop finger control and agility around the fret-board. They could also be used as preparation to learning new chords, and provide opportunities for melodic improvisation. There are chord based activities too.

Revolting Recorders This resource pack presents a six week unit of work for teaching the recorder in any setting, including full class groups. It has many opportunities for differentiation and further study. The emphasis is on enjoyment and participation for all, with activities for composition, improvisation, ensemble playing and learning musical notation. Resources within the pack include suggested lesson plans, IWB activities, simple melodies, sheets to photocopy and backing tracks. This is not a tutor book, but a resource of activities which develop general musicianship through playing recorder.

Pentatonic Playtime is a resource pack designed to be used with any tuned instruments. It uses 5 note pentatonic scales in easy to follow, fun packed activities including games, composition, song writing and accompaniment. Many of the activities can be used at different levels. There are support resources for the interactive whiteboard and backing tracks for the activities.

Tunes for Chimes is a flexible resource, designed for use with any tuned percussion, but particularly eight-note chime bar sets. However, it can be adapted for use with most instruments in the first few lessons, as it uses a range of C - C for the activities. It was developed as a tool for teaching chime bars to whole classes at once, so there is an emphasis on ensemble playing at different levels. It includes activities for composition and improvisation, and backing tracks.

The Blaydon Races Our first KS2 Wider Opportunities publication, and still one of our best sellers, this project is designed to encourage pupils’ understanding and enjoyment of traditional British music and dance, particularly the styles of the north east. It will also develop their physical and interaction skills! The book and CD can be used by classroom teachers for follow-up activities or simply to repeat the project in the years to come.

Fifes, Drums & Recorders Two books, one for teachers and the other for pupils, especially designed to help you feel more confident in delivering exciting music lessons using recorders and drums, with extension activities for treble recorder and fife. Included are simple piano accompaniments, National Curriculum target ideas for composition and performing and a CD of backing tracks.

Jiggling Feet A CLASSROOM BASED TRADITIONAL DANCE PROJECT
This project has been devised to enable classroom teachers to have more confidence in delivering an exciting and valuable series of lessons using dance. It should prove to be a valuable aid in helping students who are learning traditional instruments to understand how the music accompanies the dances.

The 11 Track CD will provide help you to teach the dances.

The main aims of this project is to teach children to dance in time and engage with the dances. The dances in the book are a guide for instrumental teachers to adapt while teaching traditional music projects.

We suggest that it will take at least a term to learn the eleven dances. It is hoped that students who have been involved in traditional instrumental projects can accompany the students dancing, with the help of the instrumental teacher.
