NEWS
from Morpeth First School

The County Music Service is working to protect Northumberland's rich musical heritage, by enthusing children and young people about traditional music. it runs a a traditional music ensemble which sums up the passion for the subject, called the Northumbrian Ranters.

The Northumbrian Ranters are a Traditional Music Ensemble encompassing fiddles, cellos, accordions, flutes and Northumbrian pipes. The Ensemble play all types of traditional music from England, Ireland, Scotland and even from places as far away as Spain and Norway.

Northumberland is the first county to introduce traditional music exams in partnership with international examinations board Trinity Guildhall. At present there are no accredited exams in traditional music, so if a student wants to go to university with a music qualification, they can not do this with traditional music. However within the next two years the Music Service is hoping to be able to introduce accredited exams in traditional music. This will enable children who love traditional music to take up a vocational qualification for the first time.
