Special Needs

“Music can be used to help children and adults with a wide range of needs arising from such varied causes as learning difficulties, mental and physical illness, physical and sexual abuse, stress and terminal illness. Emotional, cognitive and developmental needs can be addressed through interactive music making within a secure relationship offered by specialists.”
Nordoff-Robbins: On Music Therapy.

Children with special needs should have as much access to music as any others. Several of our teachers are trained and experienced in music-making with disadvantaged children and adults with difficulties such as those mentioned above. The support offered can be tailored to suit individual requirements, but proven success has already been seen in areas such as:
Music lessons for children with visual impairments
Weekly group music making sessions over a year at Ashington College
Musical improvisation sessions with small groups or individual student
Publications for Special School music making
Singing and musical activities for special schools
Music technology activities

“Music Therapy is grounded in the belief that everyone can respond to music, no matter how ill, disabled or traumatised.”
Nordoff-Robbins
We can supply music therapists trained in the Nordoff-Robbins methods. We also believe in the importance of self expression through the combined performance arts, and would be happy to organise projects involving dance, drama and music.
